Burning Man or Bust

24 Aug

This past week I have been watching my roommate go through the transformation of turning into a “Burner”. No she’s not sitting in a cloudy room hovered over a bong, she is going to Burning Man! It slowly started last week when she started to pull out some of her camping gear to get things organized for a week in the desert. Then I came home one night to find strange items that would later be used to decorate her bike and solar string lights bathing in the suns’ rays to be charged for the evening. A few days later I get a phone call from her warning me that the garage was destroyed due to all her gear being inventoried and put in totes. 3 days and counting until departure I come home to find our entire freezer overtaken by large bottles of water that are to be used in the place of ice for her coolers.
I really didn’t know anything about Burning Man. My thoughts were that it was some big party for a week where people get completely wasted and socialize. So at this point with 3 days to go I am thinking my roommate has completely lost it. At her age she should really be getting out of this party thing. I decided I better find out a little more about this thing. I start out simple just by asking when it starts and when she will be back. Then move on to what is the place like and how will the camping situation be. She tells me its a huge event and 50,000 people will be there and its like a city and on and on. I couldn’t believe what she was telling me so I went to the website and couldn’t believe it. The event is amazing!

As I was watching her completely cover her bicycle with gray fur and lights I was now becoming a little jealous I wasn’t going. Today she filled up her entire truck with supplies that included 2 tents one for a closet and one to sleep in. A table and chairs, a clothes rack, and a mattress she bought on Craigs List to sleep on. And enough food and clothes to last a week.
Although I think the whole thing might be a little over my head I think its an event I need to put on my bucket list.

I have to say that I am just as fascinated about Burning Man as you are – now that I have seen the prep work that goes into into…oh, and the itinerary that is part of the experience. Be warned, I will be linking or copying your post onto my blog, only in small part because of the awesome photo of the freezer!

i’m very jealous about your roommate going to Burning Man. I have friends who go every year – they put up a theme camp (which includes a HUGE art structure where they put on plays). a friend and i are thinking of going next year. but the fact that participating in the event means you have to be 100% completely self-reliant is a little daunting. hope your roommate has a great time.
